Massage is Medicine

Massage is Medicine

Massage is Medicine! Some people choose to indulge in massage therapy on rare occasions to pamper ones self to simply relax. But did you know it is proven to reduce stress and anxiety in order to sustain a greater level of health? Massage reduces stress and anxiety to improve your health both physically and mentally, helping to maintain a balance within the body known as homeostasis. Homeostasis is a process that maintains the stability of the human body’s internal environment in response to changes in external conditions.

Whether it is stress, back pain, sports injury, and even depression, massage therapy helps to maintain that internal balance we all need to live an optimally healthy life style. At times we are so hunkered down with our daily grind we get accustomed to the stresses that life brings, and we tend to ignore signs that we simply need to stop for a moment and rejuvenate our bodies and minds.

Another solid point I cannot stress enough is that no other health professional we see on a normal basis is going to inspect our bodies more closely than a good massage therapist. And take note that I say “Good massage therapist”, because unfortunately there are some massage therapists out there that do not pay attention to signs and signals that something is wrong, and in the least should let a client know of some concerns if there is something abnormal observed. Massage therapists that have attended an accredited school for body work have taken pathology as part of their curriculum in order to detect some possible health problems we observe on our clients, and to inform our clients and suggest that they seek a doctor in some cases where it appears there may be skin cancer or some other pathology of concern.

These are some of the reason I believe massage is medicine, both as preventive medicine, as well as maintaining a general higher level of health by receiving regular massage sessions. I do implore people visiting Myrtle Beach that are seeking massage therapy, to make a better choice. Instead of booking a massage with the local spa and not really knowing who you will have as a massage therapist, to continue reading more of my blog articles, as well as my website to see my training and path so far as a massage professional in Myrtle Beach.

Benefits of Massage

Benefits of Massage

I would like to briefly discuss the true benefits of massage. What do we as clients and therapists benefit from massage therapy? As a massage therapist in Myrtle Beach, I try to stay active and eat healthy, I get out and enjoy the sun and pursue some outdoor hobbies and interests, yet I still get my share of aches and pains in my joints and muscular system.

I think some times I may not push myself enough to stay active and fit, and other times I push myself too hard and inevitably injure myself with a strain or sprain in a random muscle. As a massage therapist, I not only find massage therapy beneficial to my healing, to receive regular massage therapy sessions in my opinion truly does act as preventative medicine as well. I prefer a deep sports massage, ridding my body of trigger points, as well as a good assisted stretching regimen that keeps me limber.

There are many different types of massage therapy that promote wellness in different ways , which is really why I try to incorporate quite a few different massage techniques to my sessions. As always I ask for feedback from my client about the amount of pressure in each area I am working, but I generally infuse deep tissue, Swedish massage, Lymphatic drainage massage, and a bit of thai massage and stretching. I truly try to give a massage that will balance out the body, returning the client to a centered homeostasis.

I do believe the gate theory has some merit with the healing properties of massage therapy, in short the pleasure of massage over comes the pain of an injury by over taking the nerve pathway. But there is more to it than that. I would like to list some of the major benefits of massage.

  • Promotes greater systemic oxygen and blood flow.
  • Reduces toxins in the body with lymphatic massage techniques
  • Maintains a more limber musculature, thus reducing the risk of injury in a sports related activity.
  • Massage reduces tension and stress.
  • Using quality emollients, massage therapy can prevent premature aging of the skin.
  • Massage therapy, as seen in my practice, increases performance in sports related activities.
  • Massage therapy reduces edema and swelling.

These are just a few key elements that make massage therapy a positive addition to anyone trying to live a healthier and happier life style. Finding a knowledgeable massage therapist that offers affordable rates is a bit like fishing at times, but there are some great therapists out there that are worth the hunt. My reviews on google ,yp.com, kudzu.com, and quite a few other web listings speak for my experience, but if you would like to book a session with one of the highest rated massage therapists in Myrtle Beach, I ask that you visit my website and read a bit more about my training and experience, and then give me a call to book a massage session . I travel to my clients with a great massage table, linens, and all the massage products I need for the session.

What makes a good massage therapist?

What makes a good massage therapist?

I think it takes many qualities and special abilities to truly be a good massage therapist . I believe one of the main qualities of a good massage therapist is to have a deep connection in some form of spirituality, or spiritual practice. Where does massage therapists inner strength come from? Whether it be from God, or nature, or a little bit of both, I truly believe this is one of the main facets that embody a good massage therapist.

Proper schooling, continued education, and training are also very essential , but it also takes nurturing hands and a compassionate heart. To be awakened if you will , to be filled with empathy and caring for others. To have great knowledge of anatomy, physiology, as well as pathology are obviously needed to be a good massage therapist, but I do feel in the hierarchy of traits that make a good therapist, it first takes good hands and a good heart that is comfortable with having that nurturing touch.
I have been a massage therapist now for 7 years, and am continually learning new therapies, or advancing my knowledge in modalities I am already trained in, but I am still learning as I continue to work with new clients and a different array of problems they deal with.
I am fortunate to be in practice in Myrtle Beach, and live quite close to the ocean. I refer to the beach as my church, where I can recalibrate and find peace within, and I hope that my clients feel that peaceful presence within me as they allow me into thier space for a short time of therapy.
I am looking so very forward to this summer season, and anticipate meeting some really great people and clients as I share my gift of touch.
If you would like to book a session with a unique and talented massage therapist, please do not hesitate contacting me to set up an appointment. Although I do work solo, I do accomodate couples as well as groups for massage sessions. Whether it is to simply destress and relax, or you are needing medical massage from muscular trauma… I am trained in many modalities and customize the massage session according to my clients needs.
I look forward to meeting you all, in good health… Michael Champagne LMT.(843-492-1764)

I am trained in most of the default massage modalities we are all familiar with, from Swedish to Deep tissue,as well as neuromuscular and acupressure work, but I have also received specialized training in exfoliating body scrubs and body treatments at some of the upper echelon spas in Myrtle Beach. I am going on my fifth year as a professional massage therapist, and as of the beginning of 2012,I have been developing and growing my own mobile massage service. I do have in call availability if the need arises and my out call service is not an option for my clients as well, please just inquire when you call to book an appointment as to location of my in call service.

I am offering a fall massage special of 90$ for 90 minutes, any massage modality of your choosing. And as always,my 90 minute service can either be a 90 minute massage,or a 60 minute massage and 30 minute no mess body scrub. I use exfoliating gloves and Argan oil for my body scrubs,as for an easy transition from scrub to massage without dealing with a salt or sugar mess. I never charge extra for any additional specialized work that needs to be done on any client.Unlike many spas, whether you want a Deep tissue massage,or a relaxing Swedish massage,my services will never fluctuate in price because I have to work a little harder.

Massage & Fibromyalgia|Myrtle Beach

Massage & Fibromyalgia|Myrtle Beach

Massage & Fibromyalgia, It is a near juxtaposition of the two if you consider this thought. Massage is an ancient form of therapy and medicine administered through touch, and Fibromyalgia finally,in the last few years, just recently has become a diagnosis for a modern disorder that has developed in women, yet also can be treated with touch therapy.

I have studied many pathologies while attending the massage institute as a student, and my own research as well on different disease and disorders that can be treated effectively with therapeutic massage. It is of the utmost importance that you are diagnosed with Fibromyalgia before seeking a recommended therapy for the disorder, but do know there are several forms of therapy to alleviate the pain associated with the disorder.

Fibromyalgia is a disorder affecting the body as a whole, with a burning pain normally starting from the torso area in the soft tissue areas of the neck, back, and buttocks, and then extending referred pain through the extremities. This systemic pain then has a domino affect on the body, affecting diet and digestion, resulting in migraine headaches, fatigue, and even depression. It’s a simple fact, that if we feel ill, tired, and are combating pain, taking care of ourselves and eating a proper diet tends to go out of the window.

So now to delve into the main recommended forms of therapy for Fibromyalgia.

  • Drugs– The last resort. Drugs are administered for this disorder, and they do help, but we are all quite aware of what drug dependency does to a persons life, and considering fibromyalgia may be a life long battle, in my opinion, a battle with an addiction to pain medication would probably lead to more severe problems in ones life.
  • Physical Therapy– Physical therapy is an amazing healing process, and a physical therapist can also teach an individual different forms of therapy for at home, and as long as a persons health coverage will cover this therapy,it is probably the best method of coping with fibromyalgia, coupled with an occasional massage therapy session.I’ve know some great physical therapists, and they do wonders for individuals in recovering from injury, but normally they do not have the healing touch that a skilled massage therapist possesses.
  • Massage Therapy– Massage therapy and fibromyalgia. It is like yin and yang, and one can be countered by the other. The very basic school of thought in massage teaches us the “Gate Theory” Massage affects pain through the central nervous system. In one theory of pain called the “gate theory,” messages of pain which normally travel from the injury to the brain are blocked before reaching the centers responsible for interpreting pain. Massage helps stimulate and close the so-called gate of pain messages. As a result, the intensity of pain perceived by the brain is decreased.(excerpt from faqs.org). A skilled and experienced massage therapist who can be intuitive of the pain threshold an individual suffering from this disorder can engage the gate theory with a proper, healing massage session.Swedish massage, utilizing intuition,as well as maintaining communication with the client, can almost be guaranteed to help alleviate the pain, and hopefully decrease the chronic flare ups and bouts of pain.

I know my craft well,as my clients can attest, and I implore you to give me a try and allow me to help you heal. I am a gifted massage therapist,I am truly a professional at what I do. If you would like to book an appointment, please don’t hesitate to call.

Affordable, professional, and convenient therapeutic massage in the comfort of your own home.

Massage Therapy and Migraines.

Massage Therapy and Migraines

The benefits of massage therapy in relation to migraine headaches and how regular massage sessions can lower the frequency of migraines.
Most of us have dealt with a migraine headache sometime in our life. Some people, such as myself, suffer from migraine headaches on a regular basis, and can attest that massage does indeed at least reduce the pain and discomfort associated with one.
I actually suffer from migraines due to an allergic reaction from the food additive MSG,or monosodium glutamate, and do have to take a prescription drug if I have ingested msg,but the drug only reduces some of the effects of the headache, and coupled with a relaxing neck and head massage is the best therapy I have yet to find. The food additive acts on the blood vessels constricting them,so in turn the massage session should be one with flowing and flushing strokes making sure to safely, but effectively flush the main arteries in the lateral neck area to open up the constricted blood flow. This type of massage is really,in my case, only on an as needed basis, while another form of migraine called cluster headaches,or cluster migraines, could truly benefit from a regular massage regimen of at least once a month,if not every 2 weeks until the headaches are better managed. Cluster headaches form from the occipital muscles in the rear base of the skull, usually on the lateral sides of the skull, and slowly creep up the head as the muscles in the peripheral area and the broad flat tendon called the galea aponeurotica on top of our head constrict and form immense tension. Regular massage therapy can reduce this type of headache drastically by keeping those occipital muscles nice and loose and free of trigger points,as well as a general level of stress lowered which is also a factor in cluster migraines.
Whether you are a local or vacationing here in Myrtle Beach and would like to try a massage session to help relieve the discomfort and pain of a migraine that just won’t go away, don’t hesitate to give me a call. I travel to my clients with a top shelf massage table, fresh linens, and any products I need for my sessions.
